Skip Washing for the Day

Washing your hair is a must, but isn't required every night. In fact, it's actually better to wash your hair only every other night or even two-three times a week. Giving your hair a break in between washes allows it time to reproduce your natural oils, which can help keep those beautiful curls.

When showering, you can wear a shower cap to prevent your hair from getting too damp.

Although everyone's hair is different, this is generally a good rule to follow. If you plan on putting pin curls in your hair, then plan to wash your hair at least two days before doing so. Clean hair won't hold as well, so starting the process off with hair that hasn't been washed recently is a great start!

Prepare Your Hair

Your hair will need the right texture in order to hold the curl. You can prep your hair by applying a mousse to it. If you're going to use a curling iron to curl the hair before placing it up in pins, then you'll want to apply some type of heat protection to your hair.

If using a mouse, then don't be shy. Be sure to apply a good amount to your hair in order for it to hold throughout the night and into the next day.

Spray Them and Let Them Set

To help your curls hold even better, you can lightly spray them with water. Then, curl and place in the pins. Once they're in the pins, spray all of your hair with hair spray.

Now, you'll want to give them some time to set. If you take the curls out immediately, then they might not hold for as long. Instead, consider keeping them pinned up overnight. Sleep on a satin pillowcase to prevent your hair from being pulled out or becoming frizzy.

If you don't have time to let them set overnight, then at least wait until the curls have completely cooled down (if you use a curling iron).

Dry Fully Before Brushing Them Out

After allowing your curls to cool down and dry completely, it's time to release the pins. Take the pins out and let the curls fall. At this time, the curls will be tight.

To help loosen them a bit, gently brush the curls out. A boar-bristle brush will soften the curls. Do keep in mind that brushing your curls isn't required.

Only take this step if you don't want tight curls. You'll achieve more of a wavy look if you brush them out.

Apply Light Oil

Applying a small amount of oil to your curls after taking them out of the pins will help them hydrated and prevent them from frizzing. You can also use a serum. Place a small amount in your hand and then rub your two hands together.

Start at the ends of your hair and work your way up to the roots. Be gentle as not to pull the curls out.

Wear Straps or a Loose Shirt

Although this last tip won't help your curls stay in longer, it can prevent you from damaging your curls or creating frizz. This is something you've most likely done in the past. You started styling your hair and put a lot of hard work into making your hair look amazing, only to realize you still needed to switch shirts.

If the shirt you're wearing while styling your hair has a small neckline, then it might cause you to ruin your hair when taking it off. As you lift the shirt over your head you're hoping it won't make things frizzy only to find it did. To avoid this, be sure to wear a loose shirt or tank top when pinning up your curls.
